Germanic Studies Conference and Travel Funding Overview
Introduction
The President's Travel Assistance Program (Fall 2025 deadline is 9/25) bianually provides up to $600 for travel to a limited number of students on a competitive basis to present papers, posters, or creative work at conferences related to issues of representation in service to the University's interest in promoting an inclusive learning community for all.
The UIC Graduate Student Council offers up to $550 in the form of GSC Travel Award on a quarterly basis for those presenting, chairing a session, or leading a discussion at a disciplinary meeting. If your costs exceed those $550 and are presenting your work, you can also apply for travel funds up to $150 from the UIC Graduate College Presenter Award Fund. Alternatively, if your travel will cost $150 or less, you might want to start with the Graduate College Fund and save the GSC fund for a later initiative.
Our department also has a Graduate Education Fund that can be applied to costs above and beyond those listed above. These funds can also be used as seed or matching funds for funding opportunities requiring a departmental investment. Please email your DGS at sahall@uic.edu about your upcoming travel and your budget and I will help you work through the steps for accessing that pool of funding. You may disregard the instructions on the LCSL website that indicate specific deadlines and submission to Brenna Rice.
For those travelling abroad, the Office of International Services has provided these guidelines. Per the university's travel safety policy, if you are traveling abroad with the support of UIC funds and to do work related to UIC, you must get written advance approval from the unit head (email srott@uic.edu) and register your international travel with the university's international safety roster.
