The American Academy in Berlin is a private, independent, non-profit center for advanced study in the humanities, public policy, social sciences, and the arts. Our Berlin Prize fellowships allow scholars, writers, artists, and policy experts to pursue research in Berlin, as part of our mission to foster greater understanding and dialogue between the people of the United States and the people of Germany. The Berlin Prize fellowships offer outstanding individuals invaluable time away from daily obligations to work on a project for a full academic semester or, in some cases, for an entire year. Public policy fellowships may be of shorter duration.

About twenty-six Berlin Prizes are conferred each year by an independent selection committee, which aims to shape a present-day republic of letters diverse in age, gender, ethnicity, and intellectual interests. While in residence, Berlin Prize Fellows pursue a wide range of creative and academic projects, some, but by no means all, linked to German topics. Fellows reside in the Hans Arnhold Center on Lake Wannsee. The Academy provides a monthly stipend of $5000, roundtrip airfare, partial board, and comfortable accommodations, several suitable for families. As complement to the Berlin Prize fellowships, we foster sustainable transatlantic relations, and also offer a diverse public program.
