"Writing In/Hiding Out: Gender, Celebrity Authorship, and the Contemporary
Literary Market."
Elfriede Jelinek's play* Der Tod und das Mädchen IV (Jackie) *(2002) and
Martin Walser's novel *Ein liebender Mann* (2008) offer insight on
the celebrity subject, revealing a highly gendered experience of life lived
in the limelight. The celebrity characters at the center of each text,
Jackie Kennedy and J.W. Goethe respectively, serve as representatives of
celebrity culture of their own time, but can also be read as authorial
self-reflections. This makes possible a comparison of Jelinek's and
Walser's experiences as prominent members of the Kulturbetrieb. Of
particular interest is the public and media response to the authors'
controversial literary work, public statements, and self-fashioning
choices.
