Kevin Rittberger to Discuss “Shredding Laws” (“Gesetze schreddern”)

Germanic Studies, together with the Anthropocene Working Group and the Goethe Institute is excited to welcome the playwright Kevin Rittberger to campus. Rittberger's plays have been performed at the most prestigious theaters in the German-speaking world. His work engages questions of laws, humans and more-than-human beings, the environment, and the rise of right-wing political discourse. We are happy to welcome interested German speakers!

In addition, Rittberger is collaborating with artists Beate Geissler and Oliver Sann on a creative workshop (in English) entitled "Lawscapes" to be held in Gallery 400 on Thursday afternoon and Friday all day (more information below).

Kevin Rittberger is a prize-winning playwright, director, and curator based in Berlin. Rittberger's more than 20 plays have been staged at major theaters in Germany and Austria, including the the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Schauspielhaus Vienna, and the Schauspielhaus Hamburg. He has directed, performed, and curated plays at international festivals including the Berliner Festspiele and the Taipei Arts Festival. Among his most notable works is Kassandra or The World as the end of representation. Some of his most recent shows are „Black Block“ (2020), „The Entrepreneur“ (2022), „Two Suns and a Setting“ (2023), „The Great Grey Shrike“ (Vom Zeugenschutz des Raubwürgers) and „Shredding Laws“ (2024). Rittberger has received numerous fellowships and prizes for his creative work, including the Akademie der Darstellenden Künste Prize for Best Director and the Jürgen Bansemer & Ute Nyssen Playwright Prize. Rittberger has published works of theory on questions of post-dramatic theater, translation, community, and climate. He has lectured at the August Everding Theaterakademie in Munich, the Hochschule der Künste in Zürich (ZHDK), and the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch.
