From ‘Mastering the Past’ to ‘Managing Guilt’:  Germany’s Paradigm Change after Unification

In this lecture, Professor Elsaesser will address the historiographic and narrative paradigm shift in German literature and film from around 2003/2004, wherein Germany went from being imagined as a complicit population of perpetrators to being figured as a nation of victims.

Thomas Elsaesser, Professor of Film and Television Studies at the University of Amsterdam, is an historian of film and media theorist. His award-winning books include New German Cinema: A HistoryFassbinder’s Germany: History Identity SubjectEuropean Cinema: Face to Face with Hollywood, and most recently The Persistence of Hollywood.
