Refractions of the Literary Past: German Cinema and The Age of Goethe

November 7 - 8, 2019

Location

Daley Library, room 1-470

Address

801 S. Morgan St., Chicago, IL 60607

This conference seeks to explore the cinematic heritage of the Age of Goethe, ranging from the inception of the new film medium to the present day. It is interested in the historical circumstances that prompted filmmakers, at various points in time, to engage with the life and works of 18th- and early 19th-century writers, as well as in the cinematic modalities that these filmmakers bring to the subject. Colleagues from neighboring disciplines will join us to help us frame the German contributions to heritage cinema in an international context.
