Reporters in War

October 13, 2023

12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Narrative journalism, documentary photography, and documentary films covering war and conflict zones play a crucial role in shaping our understanding of the world. Such accounts and images are typically read as accurate reflections of factual realities. They are, however, artifacts and, as such, are subject to rules, conditions, and traditions like other artistic productions.
In her talk, Gabriele Riedle, a German novelist and reporter with extensive experience covering global conflicts, will discuss the aesthetic, ethical, and economic implications of representing conflicts, whether in texts, photographs, and documentary films. She will outline how such coverage has evolved and changed historically, from Homer's Trojan War to depictions of Afghanistan on Netflix. She will further examine the impact of technological innovation on narrative journalism. Riedle will also share insights from her experience working in places where daily life can be complicated and dangerous.
