Workshop: Federal Government Careers for Students of German
Monday, April 14, 2014, 1-2 pm (part I) and Wednesday, April 16, 2014, 1-2:30 (part II)
This two-part workshop will show you how to translate the skills and knowledge that you have acquired in your German classes, minor, or major into a career in the Federal Government. It will introduce you to the various internships and other Pathways Programs available to college students and recent graduates. It will provide an overview of the vast variety of career paths available, and how you can find the jobs best suited to your qualifications and interests. It will also teach you to navigate and use USAJOBS, and how to write your federal resume.
This virtual workshop will be led by Todd A. Floersheim, Sr. Federal Recruitment Advisor in the Office of Personnel Management, Recruitment, and Outreach (Washington, DC). Mr. Floersheim will integrate “behind the scenes” information and insider tips into the presentation, and he will answer your questions and take comments via live chat.
Please RSVP for this program online.
Space is limited, and students of German have priority. Students who can not be accommodated at the workshop site will be given a login code to participate off-site.
Part I:
- Pathways Programs – Recruiting and Hiring Students and Recent Graduates into Federal Careers: A focused presentation that is designed to introduce the audience to the Pathways Programs (Internships, Recent Graduates and Presidential Management Fellows (PMF). Information presented covers what each program offers to the job seeker, the basic requirements for each and a quick look at how to find Pathways Programs positions on USAJOBS.gov.
- Finding and Applying for Jobs in the Federal Government (Navigating USAJOBS): Instructor led training that provides a step-by-step process that covers searching for Federal jobs, creating your account and profile, managing your account, reviewing Job Opportunity Announcements, submitting your applications, and following up on your application status.
Part II:
- Writing Your Federal Resume: Introduces OPM’s new presentation on resume writing. The briefing explains each section of the job opportunity announcement (JOA) in an effort to better inform applicants and to assist them in selecting in or out of the job. The main part of the briefing uses a 3 part process to assist applicants in writing their resume. Attendees are shown a real JOA and walked through a process that helps them review the JOA to determine qualifications and interest, identify the important requirements and then they are shown how to tailor their resumes with the JOA. Lastly, we give a quick overview of the resume builder on USAJOBS.
